Recent advances in understanding the factors that affect the development and progression of carious lesions have not been widely adopted by the profession. Traditional diagnostic and restorative principles may be incompatible with quality care and could contribute to the imposition of unnecessary dental treatment. Quality care should be based on appropriate standards of care as well as specific diagnostic and treatment criteria consistent with current scientific knowledge.
