A growing percentage of people in the United States who have been diagnosed with AIDS are women, and it has been estimated that a much larger proportion of asymptomatic carriers of the virus are female. Most women who have been infected are heterosexually active and of childbearing age. This article presents an overview of the management of the pregnant, HIV infected woman within the framework of nurse-midwifery practice, and outlines principles for the management of the birth and newborn infant.
