Though acetylcholine per se was not attractant or repellent for Escherichia coli, it was found that acetylcholine inhibits the chemotaxis of the bacteria for aspartate. The inhibition appeared at 10(-5) M of acetylcholine and at 10(-2) M the inhibition reached 50%.
