Abstract
This review was part of a presentation made at the opening plenary session of the 12th Conference of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology, held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 12-15 August 1987. That presentation and this review provide a bird's eye view of the country, its peoples, physiography, climate, natural resources, agriculture and animal population, highlights the activities of pioneers in parasitology, and provides some information about current research.
