Sun exposure causes the majority of skin cancers. Ultraviolet radiation is important in the initiation and promotion of these cancers. Basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and many melanomas can be prevented by the proper use of sun protection. Sun defense methods can reduce morbidity and death from skin cancer.
