Chronic renal failure leads to growth retardation in every second patient with the congenital and in every third with the acquired form. The pathophysiologic events of chronic renal failure are discussed, together with their possible direct or indirect impact on growth. Documentation of such events has important therapeutic implications. In recent years dietary measures have assumed paramount importance in the treatment of growth retardation in chronic renal failure. Treatment of individually assessed pathophysiologic conditions constitutes essential support for the dietary measures.
