The Defense Style Questionnaire was administered to control subjects from the general population (N = 204) and to patients with DSM-III panic disorder (N = 39), agoraphobia (N = 39), social phobia (N = 23), or obsessive-compulsive disorder (N = 18). A specific pattern of defenses was associated with each anxiety disorder.
