The initial nursing clinical practice is the necessary practicum required for nursing students. Because of the changing learning style, many of them are under great pressure for environmental change and therefore their daily routine is severe affected. Interacting directly with patients in a female-dominated occupation, along with the general gender stereotypes, the impact is especially significant to male nursing students than to female nursing students.
The purpose of this preliminary qualitative study is to explore the gendered experiences of male nursing students during their first initial nursing clinical practice.
Both focus group interviews and individual interviews are conducted with twenty-two sophomore nursing students from a university of technology in northern Taiwan, with ten male students and twelve female students.
Two main themes emerge from the gendered experiences shared by the nursing students: Gender consciousness awakening and thus maintaining masculinity, and male advantage in the learning environments.
The results identify the specific gendered experiences of nursing students, providing implications for future nursing education and counseling service. Further, this study may serve to promote an active yet gender-sensitive nursing education for training nursing professionals.
初始护理临床实习是护理专业学生必需的实践课程。由于学习方式的转变,他们中的许多人面临着环境变化带来的巨大压力,日常生活受到严重影响。在这个以女性为主的职业中与患者直接互动,再加上普遍存在的性别刻板印象,对男护生的影响比对女护生的影响尤为显著。

护生分享的性别体验中出现了两个主要主题:性别意识觉醒与保持男子气概,以及在学习环境中的男性优势。
研究结果明确了护生特定的性别体验,为未来的护理教育和咨询服务提供了启示。此外,本研究可能有助于推动积极且具有性别敏感性的护理教育,以培养护理专业人才。
