In 2013, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has switched to an automated system for coding causes of death (IRIS). This change of method breaks with the tradition of manual coding of death certificates by medical coders that has lasted for over one hundred years. This article covers the major changes in the frequency of causes of death. It describes an increase of dementia (23%), CVA (11%), infectious diseases (43%) and risk factors (48%) as the underlying cause of death. Researchers, policy makers and medical doctors should take into account the differences between manual and automated coding when interpreting trends or comparing countries.
