Abstract

BACKGROUND

To increase the utilization of preventive dental care, it is essential to improve the knowledge and attitude of parents about such cares. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of school children's parents toward fissure sealant (FS) and professional fluoride therapy in Isfahan.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, school children's parents ( = 637) were selected based on proportional cluster sampling. A valid and reliable questionnaire was designed, including demographic section, questions about parents' experience and their knowledge and attitude about professional fluoride and FS therapy. Data were analyzed by ANOVA, regression, Chi-square, and correlation coefficient tests.

RESULTS

The means of total knowledge and knowledge about fluoride therapy and FS were 5.9 ± 4.1 out of 19, 3.3 ± 2.0 out of 9 and 2.6 ± 2.7 out of 10, respectively. The mean of attitude was 33.7 ± 5.8. The mean of knowledge toward FS therapy was significantly higher in academically educated parents ( = 0.023). The mean of total knowledge among those who received their knowledge by their dentist was also significantly higher than that of other resources such as mass media ( = 0.003). Total knowledge was positively correlated with attitude ( < 0.001, coefficient = 0.5). Of participants, 10.4% (54) and 23.2% (124) had the experience of FS and fluoride therapy, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Based on the low level of knowledge regarding professional preventive care in this study and the effectiveness of knowledge acquired through dentists and mass media consultations, it might be effective to require them to consider such training more seriously.

为提高预防性牙科护理的利用率,改善家长对这类护理的认知和态度至关重要。本研究旨在评估伊斯法罕学龄儿童家长对窝沟封闭剂(FS)和专业氟化物治疗的知识、态度及实践情况。

材料与方法

在这项横断面研究中,基于比例整群抽样选取了学龄儿童家长(n = 637)。设计了一份有效且可靠的问卷,包括人口统计学部分、关于家长经验以及他们对专业氟化物和FS治疗的知识与态度的问题。数据通过方差分析、回归分析、卡方检验和相关系数检验进行分析。

结果

在19分的总分中,关于氟化物治疗和FS的总知识得分均值分别为5.9 ± 4.1分、在9分中关于氟化物治疗的知识得分为3.3 ± 2.0分、在10分中关于FS的知识得分为2.6 ± 2.7分。态度得分均值为33.7 ± 5.8分。受过高等教育的家长对FS治疗的知识得分均值显著更高(P = 0.023)。通过牙医获取知识的人群的总知识得分均值也显著高于通过大众媒体等其他来源获取知识的人群(P = 0.003)。总知识与态度呈正相关(P < 0.001,系数 = 0.5)。参与者中,分别有10.4%(54人)和23.2%(124人)有FS和氟化物治疗的经历。
