Abstract

This article is adapted from the address Dr. Harris delivered as the recipient of the American Diabetes Association's Richard R. Rubin Award for 2017. This award recognizes a behavioral researcher who has made outstanding, innovative contributions to the study and understanding of the behavioral aspects of diabetes in diverse populations. Dr. Harris delivered the address in June 2017 at the Association's 77th Scientific Sessions in San Diego, Calif.
