Abstract

OBJECTIVE

To assess the awareness of childhood autism among physicians undergoing residency training in various disciplines.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted at a research and training hospital in Istanbul, Turkey, in February 2013 and comprised physicians undergoing residency training in various disciplines. Data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Questions about "awareness on autism" were prepared in the light of "Knowledge about Childhood Autism among Health Workers questionnaire.

RESULTS

Of the 128 physicians, 122(95.3%) were aware that the most known characteristic of childhood autism was "failure to build-up friendship". All of the 29(22.66%) physicians at the neuropsychiatric disciplines were aware that "autism can be a genetic disorder", whereas, in other disciplines 69(69.7) physicians had that awareness. Besides, 15(51.7%) of the residents of the neuropsychiatric disciplines thought that "autism can be associated with childhood epilepsy", while 32(32.3%) physicians of other disciplines gave a similar answer (p=0.057).

CONCLUSIONS

The awareness on childhood autism of residents belonging to the non- neuropsychiatric disciplines was moderate.

目的

评估接受各学科住院医师培训的医生对儿童自闭症的认知情况。

方法

这项横断面研究于2013年2月在土耳其伊斯坦布尔的一家研究与培训医院进行，研究对象为接受各学科住院医师培训的医生。数据通过自行填写的问卷收集。关于“自闭症认知”的问题是根据“卫生工作者对儿童自闭症的了解情况调查问卷”编制的。

结果

在128名医生中，122名（95.3%）知晓儿童自闭症最广为人知的特征是“无法建立友谊”。神经精神学科的29名（22.66%）医生都知晓“自闭症可能是一种遗传性疾病”，而在其他学科中，有69名（69.7%）医生有此认知。此外，神经精神学科的15名（51.7%）住院医师认为“自闭症可能与儿童癫痫有关”，而其他学科的32名（32.3%）医生给出了类似答案（p = 0.057）。
