The author reviews some literature data available on discovery, morphology and physiology of the atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) with special emphasis on the morphology of specific ANF granules, mechanisms of secretion and deposition in cardiomyocytes. The granules formation during embryogenesis, ANF structure and physiologic effect on the kidney, smooth muscles, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system are analysed. Molecular mechanisms of ANF action are suggested. Current knowledge about ANF system significance in the genesis of some disorders, arterial hypertension in particular, is evaluated.
