Fetal equine fibroblasts exposed to bovine papillomavirus became transformed by the criteria of morphological alterations and the acquisition of an increased life span, although they failed to grow in soft agar. Papillomavirus genome persisted in the transformed fibroblasts and was apparently not integrated with the cellular genome. These findings support the notion that bovine papillomaviruses are involved in the production of equine sarcoids.
