Abstract

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of calcium hydroxide (Ca[OH]) and chlorhexidine (CHX) gel on matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) secretion in periapical lesions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 60 patients were randomly divided into two groups that were to receive different medications. Pre-and post-treatment samples were collected from the interstitial fluid of periapical lesions using sterile paper points. VIP and MMP-9 levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits, and the data were statistically analyzed.

RESULTS

Gender and smoking habits had no effect on the pre- and post-treatment VIP and MMPs levels. Intragroup analyses revealed that in the Ca(OH) group, the post-treatment VIP level was found to be significantly higher than the pre-treatment VIP level. In the CHX group, the post-treatment MMP-9 level was significantly higher than the pre-treatment MMP-9 level.

CONCLUSION

According to the results of the present study, the type of the medication affected the amount of periapical VIP and MMP-9 secretion.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

VIP is a neuropeptide that promotes new bone formation. Thus, intracanal Ca(OH) medication may accelerate the repair process of bone tissue.

目的

本研究旨在评估氢氧化钙(Ca[OH])和洗必泰(CHX)凝胶对根尖病变中基质金属蛋白酶-9(MMP-9)和血管活性肠肽(VIP)分泌的影响。

材料和方法

将 60 名患者随机分为两组,分别使用不同的药物。使用无菌纸尖从根尖病变的间质液中采集治疗前后的样本。采用酶联免疫吸附试剂盒测量 VIP 和 MMP-9 水平,并对数据进行统计学分析。

结果

性别和吸烟习惯对 VIP 和 MMPs 水平的治疗前后均无影响。组内分析显示,在 Ca(OH)组中,治疗后 VIP 水平明显高于治疗前 VIP 水平。在 CHX 组中,治疗后 MMP-9 水平明显高于治疗前 MMP-9 水平。

结论

根据本研究结果,药物类型影响根尖 VIP 和 MMP-9 分泌量。

临床意义

VIP 是一种促进新骨形成的神经肽。因此,根管内 Ca(OH) 药物可能会加速骨组织的修复过程。
