A standardized rubric for writing assessment can improve concordance in expectations across a nurse educator community; however, standardization may also pose a perceived threat to faculty academic freedom. To improve assessment consistency while retaining academic freedom, an innovative rubric system that offers a compromise is proposed; it includes both standardized objective areas of assessment as well as areas of assessment for individualized instructor determination. In creating a hybrid standardized rubric, a community of nurse educators can retain academic freedom while better serving students with consistent expectations for writing skills.
