Melinda Hermanns, PhD, RN, has been a nurse for 25 years and a nurse educator for 18 years. She teaches at The University of Texas at Tyler School of Nursing. Her research interests include chronic illness, specifically Parkinson's disease and cancer, as well as nursing education. Danice Greer, PhD, RN, has been a nurse for 34 years and a nurse educator for 23 years. She is an NCF member and conducts research and teaches in The University of Texas at Tyler's graduate school.

Teaching nursing students using a strengths-based instructional framework provides an encouraging and positive learning environment. The authors advocate learning one's own strengths and gifts through the Strengthsfinder tool, then applying that self-understanding to teach in a way that instills confidence in students.
