The safety recommendations for studies on acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) using nonhuman primates are based on knowledge about the epidemiology of the disease in humans, characteristics of the virus, and standard methods for handling nonhuman primates in the laboratory. Appropriate procedures avoid exposure to potentially infectious materials by skin puncture or to mucous membranes by using appropriate disinfecting agents, physical containment, protective clothing, and animal handling techniques.
