In the years 1830 two different positions are taken concerning midwives. Velpeau charges all of them with incapability. With a more qualified opinion, Delacoux lays the responsibility at a weak teaching. Otherwise it is not impossible that the feeling of jealousy observed in obstetricians' reactions is justified by an attraction of practice for midwives.
