In case of vaginal delivery herpes genitalis of pregnant women is the main reason for infection of the new-born. According to Anne Yeager, 2.4% of pregnant women with a past history if HSV infections are asymptomatically shedding herpes viruses at term without manifestation of a herpes infection of the new-born in most cases. The reasons for this could be: a sufficient antibody titre of the new-born (diaplacental transmission of maternal antibodies; term infant. According to Whitley the morbidity is about 1 to 5 infections per 10,000 deliveries; 50% of the infected infants do not show any cutaneous efflorescences and could therefore be wrong diagnosed.
