The aim of this article is to provide an insight into the various modalities of retention and types of appliance used in achieving this objective.
Maintaining the orthodontically treated teeth in their corrected position is a challenging and ominous task since the inception of this specialty. Orthodontic retainers play a pivotal role in preventing posttreatment tooth movement, thereby maintaining the esthetic, function, and stability of the stomatognathic system.
An extensive study of literature suggests that there are significant variations in the results describing the effectiveness, cost factors, survival times, oral hygiene status, and regimen of various orthodontic retention appliances. In terms of patient's satisfaction and speech articulation, vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs) are better than Hawley retainers. Occlusal contacts are better achieved with Hawley retainers than VFRs.
Currently, there is insufficient high-quality evidence in favor of a particular retention appliance/regime or protocol. There is a need for further evidence-based high-quality studies/randomize controlled trial studies (RCTs) to evaluate different orthodontic retention appliances and regime after the orthodontic treatment.
Irrespective of the appliance, the patients should be prepared for a long-term or indefinite retention phase following orthodontic treatment to prevent relapse.
本文旨在深入探讨实现该目标所采用的各种保持方式及矫治器类型。
自正畸专业创立以来,将正畸治疗后的牙齿维持在矫正位置一直是一项具有挑战性且艰巨的任务。正畸保持器在防止治疗后牙齿移动方面起着关键作用,从而维持口颌系统的美观、功能和稳定性。
广泛的文献研究表明,在描述各种正畸保持矫治器的有效性、成本因素、使用寿命、口腔卫生状况及治疗方案方面,结果存在显著差异。就患者满意度和言语清晰度而言,真空压膜保持器(VFRs)优于霍利保持器。霍利保持器比真空压膜保持器能更好地实现咬合接触。
目前,尚无足够的高质量证据支持某一特定的保持矫治器/治疗方案或协议。需要进一步开展基于证据的高质量研究/随机对照试验研究(RCTs),以评估正畸治疗后的不同正畸保持矫治器和治疗方案。
无论采用何种矫治器,正畸治疗后患者都应做好长期或不确定的保持阶段的准备,以防止复发。
