Cells of Campylobacter jejuni damaged by freezing or mild heat showed increased sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide and also required the addition of catalase for growth on nutrient agar. These phenomena, which could have important practical consequences, were not associated, however, with changes in total catalase activity and may be due to alterations in outer membrane permeability.
