Abstract

PURPOSE

The objective of this study was to prospectively assess the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on diabetic retinopathy lesions and macular edema in patients undergoing the treatment for diabetic foot ulcers.

METHODS

We compared two groups: a first group including 25 patients with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy treated by HBOT for foot ulcers, and a second group (control group) composed of 25 patients with diabetic retinopathy who did not receive HBOT. The HBOT protocol performed for the patients in the first group was: 30 sessions of 90 minutes each at 2.5 ATA with a mean frequency of five sessions per week. All patients had an ophthalmological exam at baseline (visual acuity, intraocular pressure, fundus exam), fundus photography and an OCT exam. A follow-up exam was performed at the conclusion of the HBOT.

RESULTS

Compared to the control group, patients treated with HBOT showed a regression or stabilization of diabetic retinopathy lesions and a decrease in central macular thickness (CMT).

CONCLUSION

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may improve diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. This therapy may serve as an adjunctive treatment in the management of retinal ischemia and capillary hyperpermeability in diabetic retinopathy.

目的

本研究的目的是前瞻性评估高压氧疗法(HBOT)对接受糖尿病足溃疡治疗患者的糖尿病视网膜病变损害和黄斑水肿的影响。

方法

我们比较了两组:第一组包括25例接受HBOT治疗足部溃疡的非增殖性糖尿病视网膜病变患者,第二组(对照组)由25例未接受HBOT的糖尿病视网膜病变患者组成。为第一组患者实施的HBOT方案为:在2.5 ATA下进行30次治疗,每次90分钟,平均每周5次。所有患者在基线时均进行了眼科检查(视力、眼压、眼底检查)、眼底摄影和OCT检查。在HBOT结束时进行了随访检查。

结果

与对照组相比,接受HBOT治疗的患者糖尿病视网膜病变损害出现消退或稳定,中心黄斑厚度(CMT)降低。

结论

高压氧疗法可能改善糖尿病视网膜病变和糖尿病黄斑水肿。这种疗法可作为糖尿病视网膜病变视网膜缺血和毛细血管高通透性管理中的辅助治疗方法。
