Abstract
The major developments of recent years in computer sciences have led to the creation of large morbidity data bases. Although these data sets are not compiled expressly for research, they serve researchers if certain precautions are taken. These concern definition of the study population, unit of analysis, record linkage and both reliability and validity of the data.
