Antidepressant medications and psychotherapies can help many patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), yet millions of primary care patients do not receive effective treatment. Patients with MDD often experience side effects, inadequate response, and residual symptoms that interfere with functioning, all of which can lead to discontinuation. To improve patient outcomes, clinicians can implement strategies of measurement-based care to regularly assess depressive symptoms, treatment adherence, and adverse effects to make informed treatment decisions. Patient education and involvement in managing their illness can also improve outcomes.
