The conception of the American Institute of Nutrition in 1926 culminated in the publication of the first issue of the Journal of Nutrition in September 1928. It was nearly 5 years later--April 1933--before the organizational meeting of the AIN as the future scientific society was convened. At this meeting, 172 persons were declared to be charter members, among whom were the original founders--10 men and 1 woman. These 11 pointers of AIN were rather unique. They had diverse backgrounds, different professional aspirations, and a dissimilarity of scientific objectives. Notwithstanding, they "were motivated by a desire to build a competent science of nutrition out of the rather chaotic mass of fragments of knowledge then in existence."
