Abstract

The arsenal against different types of cancers has increased impressively in the last decade. The detailed knowledge of the tumor microenvironment enables it to be manipulated in order to help the immune system fight against tumor cells by using specific checkpoint inhibitors, cell-based treatments, targeted antibodies, and immune stimulants. In fact, it is widely known that the first immunotherapeutic tools as immune stimulants for cancer treatment were bacteria and still are; specifically, the use of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) continues to be the treatment of choice for preventing cancer recurrence and progression in non-invasive bladder cancer. BCG and also other mycobacteria or their components are currently under study for the immunotherapeutic treatment of different malignancies. This review focuses on the preclinical and clinical assays using mycobacteria to treat non-urological cancers, providing a wide knowledge of the beneficial applications of these microorganisms to manipulate the tumor microenvironment aiming at tumor clearance.

在过去十年中,对抗不同类型癌症的手段显著增加。对肿瘤微环境的详细了解使得人们能够通过使用特定的检查点抑制剂、基于细胞的治疗方法、靶向抗体和免疫刺激剂来对其进行调控,从而帮助免疫系统对抗肿瘤细胞。事实上,众所周知,作为癌症治疗免疫刺激剂的首批免疫治疗工具是细菌,而且现在仍然如此;具体而言,卡介苗(BCG)的使用仍然是预防非侵袭性膀胱癌复发和进展的首选治疗方法。目前,卡介苗以及其他分枝杆菌或其成分正在用于不同恶性肿瘤免疫治疗的研究中。本综述聚焦于使用分枝杆菌治疗非泌尿系统癌症的临床前和临床试验,全面介绍了这些微生物在调控肿瘤微环境以实现肿瘤清除方面的有益应用。
