Acute gouty arthritis in 4 patients with systemic sclerosis.

Gout with rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus is rarely reported. There has been only one previous case report of gout with systemic sclerosis. We report 4 patients with chronic systemic sclerosis who developed acute gouty arthritis. Gout does occur in systemic sclerosis although the incidence is unknown. Synovial fluid analysis may be necessary to differentiate gout from the arthropathy of systemic sclerosis.
