Attention can be confidently focused on the area of maximal injury (upper versus lower urinary tract), and definitive or temporizing measures instituted according to circumstances. Although specialty management is ultimately required, diagnostic and therapeutic efforts initiated by emergency personnel are important to efficient appraisal and disposition.
