This short review of different EMG techniques has indicated their values in studies of the microphysiology and anatomy of the normal and abnormal motor unit (Table I). It has also pointed to the fact that the combination of techniques gives more information than each of them alone. The techniques can be used in the study of normal motor units and also help in diagnosis and in understanding the pathophysiological processes which occur in neuromuscular disorders.
