In order to find an effective method for monitoring restless, agitated, and confused patients, we used an infrared sensing device placed above the patient's bed. This device was more useful than the previously available pressure transducer, which is placed beneath the patient's mattress. The infrared sensing device was more accurate, less cumbersome, generally easier to operate, and less likely to be tampered with than the pressure transducer.
