The influence of phenoxybenzamine on micturition was examined in 46 patients with functional bladder neck obstruction. Due to blockade of the alpha-adrenergic receptors at the bladder neck an increase of the maximal flow rate from a mean value of 13.6 to 24.6 ml s-1 was found during the treatment. In addition, there was a relaxation of the functional urethral length and a reduction of the maximal urethral closure pressure from 96.3 to 74.4 cm H2O. The most significant changes resulting from the application of Dibenzyran were observed in the neuropathic bladder with a reduction of the functional urethral length from 24.3 to 20.5 mm and a decrease of Pura max from 100.5 to 82.7 cm H2O. Furthermore, we achieved an increase of the maximal flow rate from 13.4 to 22.5 ml s-1.
