Metal iodates are of current research interest because of their potential application as nonlinear optical crystals but the exploration of new iodates is mainly concentrated on complex cation iodates. In contrast, iodates with multiple anion groups are rarely reported. In this communication, the first noncentrosymmetric alkaline-metal iodate-sulfate, Na(IO)(SO) has been designed, synthesized and characterized.
