A required computer course is described that has the purpose of preparing dental students to write computer programs, use software packages, and evaluate software for purchase. A questionnaire distributed to students eight months after the course revealed that the majority found the course helpful. Students were equally divided as to whether learning to write programs or to use a software package was more helpful. The course served as a stimulus for making students aware of the usefulness of a computer.
