Providing medications to patients free of charge is thought to be one of the factors affecting the success of smoking cessation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of providing free access to stop-smoking medications on the treatment adherence and short term success of quitting smoking.
All smokers who applied to a smoking cessation outpatient clinic between September 2017 and December 2019 were included in this retrospective study. Data were collected from patients' files filled using an initial evaluation and follow-up protocol.
During the study period, 518 smokers applied to our polyclinic for smoking cessation counseling. Medical therapy was prescribed for 411 (85.4%) of 481 patients who were supported by behavioral therapy. The patients had a mean age of 41.2 years, and 64.7% were male. Only 22.9% of smokers prescribed stop-smoking medications were able to obtain them for free. Patients who got the medications completely free of charge were 4 times more adherent to treatment. The success rate of quitting smoking at the end of the third month was 22.2%. The strongest effect was achieved by the full treatment compliance. At the end of 3 months, the success of quitting smoking was 14.1 times higher for those who were fully adherent to treatment than non-adherents.
According to our study results, the most effective success factors in short-term smoking cessation are patient compliance to treatment and free supply of stop-smoking medications, one of the main determinants of treatment adherence.
向患者免费提供药物被认为是影响戒烟成功的因素之一。本研究的目的是调查免费提供戒烟药物对治疗依从性和短期戒烟成功率的影响。
本回顾性研究纳入了2017年9月至2019年12月期间申请戒烟门诊的所有吸烟者。数据从使用初始评估和随访方案填写的患者档案中收集。
在研究期间，518名吸烟者申请到我们的综合门诊进行戒烟咨询。在481名接受行为疗法支持的患者中，有411名（85.4%）接受了药物治疗。患者的平均年龄为41.2岁，64.7%为男性。在开了戒烟药物的吸烟者中，只有22.9%能够免费获得药物。完全免费获得药物的患者对治疗的依从性高出4倍。第三个月末的戒烟成功率为22.2%。完全遵守治疗方案的效果最为显著。在3个月末，完全遵守治疗方案的患者戒烟成功率比不遵守治疗方案的患者高出14.1倍。
根据我们的研究结果，短期戒烟最有效的成功因素是患者对治疗的依从性以及免费提供戒烟药物，而免费提供戒烟药物是治疗依从性的主要决定因素之一。
