Hand osteoarthritis Symptomatic hand osteoarthritis (oa) is a highly prevalent disease affecting about 10 % of the general population. It causes pain, stiffness, impaired physical function and quality of life, and aesthetic discomfort. In some patients, the global burden of the disease can be as severe as in rheumatoid arthritis. Guidelines recommend a combina¬tion of pharmacological and non-pharmacological ap¬proaches for managing hand oa.
