Digestive disorders are common in the community and a frequent reason for consultation in primary care, yet there is considerable uncertainty about their prevalence, natural history and management. This paper reviews knowledge of the epidemiology of dyspepsia and acid-peptic disease and goes on to examine issues in self-care and primary care of these conditions.
