In summary, patients with chronic heart failure are frequently limited during exercise, even if they are asymptomatic at rest. Maximal exercise testing, preferably coupled with respiratory gas analysis, provides an objective method of assessing this functional limitation. Exercise testing also offers an objective method of noninvasively evaluating circulatory function in patients and, potentially, of monitoring responses to therapeutic interventions.
