Proto-onc genes are cellular genes controlling growth and differentiation. Their products form regulatory networks and include growth factors, receptors, signal transducers, amplifiers and nuclear proteins. Proto-onc genes have the potential to induce and maintain the cancerous phenotype of the cell if they are altered in structure or expression through transduction by a retrovirus or through in situ mutations.
