The oxidation of K[Ge(Hyp)] (Hyp = Si(SiMe)) with lanthanide triiodides LnI (Ln = Eu, Sm, Yb) leads to the formation of novel clusters with a Ge-core isolated as a co-crystallizate of Ge*(Hyp) () and Ge(Hyp)(Si(SiMe))(SiMe) (). Clusters and differ distinctly from the known cluster Ge(Hyp) (), which has been found earlier in the reaction of K[Ge(Hyp)] with FeCl and now identified as an intermediate product in the production of compounds and . These three compounds , , and are thus structural isomers being the first example of genuine isomerism in metalloid main-group cluster compounds.
