Abstract
Studies of maternal serum ferritin concentration have given further evidence for marked depletion of maternal iron stores during mid- and third trimester pregnancy. Iron metabolism of pregnancy and the impact of maternal iron deficiency to perinatal morbidity are reviewed. General prophylactic administration of iron supplements is recommended.
