In 2021, publication of both the latest version of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's Essentials: Nursing Competencies for Professional Nursing Education and the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine's The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Health Equity called attention to the need for increased health equity education in nursing, including social determinants of health, systemic bias, and racism. The AACN Essentials also emphasizes the importance of palliative and hospice care in nursing curricula. Health equity in palliative and hospice care cannot be achieved without robust education in both the systemic issues that cause poor health outcomes in oppressed groups, and assessment of personal biases within oneself. Recommendations for initial priorities in education, key considerations, and a review of available resources to facilitate teaching about health equity and social determinants of health are provided.
