It is reported about cytological examinations of spontaneous urine by means of Sayk's sediment chamber technique in 112 patients with tumours of the urinary bladder. Correct results are obtained in more than 98%. The correlation with histological findings is evident in 96 cases. Divergences (13 cases) are not more than one grade of differentiation. The sediment chamber technique is very suitable in exfoliative cytology of tumours of the urinary bladder. Lavage cytology is not necessary. Additional information on differentiation of malignant and benign cells can be got by the histochemical performance of alkaline-phosphatase-activity. This activity is always negative in malignant cells. Exfoliative cytology is helpful in the follow-up of bladder tumours. Its validity--especially in the fact of positive cytological findings and the lack of endoscopical proof of the tumour--is to be determined by means of a representative long-term study.
