Zhang et al. reveal a previously unknown route to toxin activation whereby bacteriophage capsid proteins bind the antitoxin domain of the CapRel fused toxin-antitoxin system, triggering translational inhibition via pyrophosporylation of tRNAs and culminating in abortive infection-mediated phage resistance.
