An analysis of 230 observations of incarcerated hernias has shown an increased amount of elderly and senile patients (68.3%) who are characterized by late search for the medical aid. In the patients operated upon postoperative complications were noted in 19.6%, postoperative lethality was 10.4%. All the dead patients (24) were older than 60 and were admitted to the hospital more than 2 days later after incarceration. Treatment of incarcerated hernias is becoming a gerontological problem and can be solved by timely operations out of incarceration after the appropriate correction of the disturbed systems of homeostasis.
