Partial cystectomy in the management of bladder carcinoma.

We reviewed 62 patients who had undergone partial cystectomy for carcinoma of the bladder. Specific indications are discussed. Five-year survival rates were 68% for stage 0-A lesions, 40% for stage B (B1 and B2), 30% for stage C and none survived even 3 years in stage D. Overall 3- and 5-year survival were 57 and 50%. Fifty-four patients have been followed for 10 years and the survival rate for this group of patients was 22% (12 patients). There was 1 death in the immediate postoperative period. The recurrence rate was 38% of which only 1 patient needed radical cystectomy while the others were controlled by transurethral resections. Reimplantation of ureters was performed in 35 patients (56%) which is a high percentage compared with other series. Postoperative irradiation was given to 41 (66%) patients, all of whom were in stages greater than or equal to B disease. Five patients (1 stage C and 4 in stage B) were operated upon during the last 2 years with no evidence of recurrence so far. The results of this review were encouraging and correlated well with other published reports.
