To be truly successful, a revascularized or replanted hand must not only survive but also function. Survival can be achieved by microvascular surgery, but function depends on integration between the initial surgery and subsequent rehabilitation. In this context, the surgical repair of a vascular injury is seen as the first step in the rehabilitation of the hand.
