The present study aimed to investigate the frequency of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) serological markers among waste collectors in the municipality of Shiraz city, southwest of Iran, 2018.
In this cross-sectional study, a total of 385 waste collectors from all 10 districts of Shiraz city, southwest of Iran were enrolled. A questionnaire was used to gather occupational and demographic information as well as awareness about viral hepatitis.
Their blood samples were collected, and the sera were investigated for the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), anti-HBs antibody, and anti-HCV antibody using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
All the participants were men with a mean age of 41 ± 8 years. Out of 385 participants, 6 (1.5%) subjects were positive for HBsAg, indicative of HBV infection. Moreover, 38 (9.9%) had a protective level of anti-HBs antibodies, while more than 90% had a low level of anti-HBs antibodies. All participants were negative for HCV antibodies.
According to these findings, evaluation of HBsAg and anti-HBs levels is recommended in the healthy program of waste collector workers (WCWs). However, this occupation might not be a risk factor for the acquisition of HBV and especially HCV infections.
本研究旨在调查2018年伊朗西南部设拉子市垃圾收集者中乙型肝炎病毒(HBV)和丙型肝炎病毒(HCV)血清学标志物的出现频率。
在这项横断面研究中,纳入了来自伊朗西南部设拉子市所有10个区的385名垃圾收集者。使用问卷调查收集职业和人口统计学信息以及对病毒性肝炎的认知情况。
采集他们的血样,采用酶联免疫吸附测定(ELISA)法检测血清中乙型肝炎表面抗原(HBsAg)、抗-HBs抗体和抗-HCV抗体的存在情况。
所有参与者均为男性,平均年龄为41±8岁。在385名参与者中,6名(1.5%)受试者HBsAg呈阳性,表明感染了HBV。此外,38名(9.9%)有保护性水平的抗-HBs抗体,而超过90%的人抗-HBs抗体水平较低。所有参与者的HCV抗体均为阴性。
根据这些研究结果,建议在垃圾收集工人(WCWs)的健康计划中评估HBsAg和抗-HBs水平。然而,该职业可能不是感染HBV尤其是HCV的危险因素。
