Lamellated cortical hyperostosis about the long bones of a premature infant is usually an indication of trauma, congenital infection or Caffey disease. Prostaglandin preparations are now being used for extended periods of time to keep the ductus arteriosus open. As a result of the long-term use of this drug, bilaterally symmetric marked diaphyseal periosteal new bone can be induced.
