The author reviews the situation of the labor market in Brazil with special reference to occupations in the health services delivery sector, which, owing to factors of urbanization, industrialization, an increase in the number of workers subscribing to the social security system, etc., is now absorbing a large percentage of the manpower pool and thereby generating an explosion of higher education in the health field. The writer urges the need for an improved regional distribution of medical professionals and for better training and more schooling for auxiliary personnel in particular.
